Geovisual Analytics Sessions at AAG 2018

Overview:

We invite papers on geovisual analytics to be included in a series of sessions atthe 2018 Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting in New Orleans from April 10 – 14.

We invite contributions exploring theoretical and practical issues of geovisualization and geovisual analytics, with the broad goal of extending our understanding of interactive visual representations of geographic data that aim to boost spatial human reasoning.

Specific topics include (but are not limited to):

  • development of novel visualization and interaction metaphors,
  • visualization and use of uncertainty and context,
  • support of spatial decision support processes,
  • typology of spatial decision problems,
  • visualization of large, multidimensional datasets,
  • advances in geovisualization and geovisual analytics technology,
  • scalable and web-basedvisualization,
  • digital storytelling in geovisual analytics,
  • development of standards and benchmarks in geovisual analytics,
  • challenges in system design, adoption, and use, and
  • applied geovisualization and geovisual analytics (including areas such as climate change, crisis management, food and water security, epidemiology, etc.)

Participants:

In addition to geographers, GIScientists, and cartographers, we welcome speakers from abroad range of disciplines, including submissions from students and junior scholars.

Submission Instructions and Deadlines:

1. Register and submit your abstract online following the AAG Guidelines.

2. Email your presenter identification number (PIN), paper title, and abstract to Alexander Savelyev (savelyev@txstate.edu) by October 25, 2017.

3. Please use the email subject “VA CFP” to be assigned to a session.

 

Visual Analytics Commission Activities at ICC in Washington, DC

We would like to invite all of you attending the upcoming International Cartographic Conference in Washington, DC to take part in Visual Analytics Commission sessions and other activities.

We are very excited to feature 29 talks across 8 dedicated sessions. You can see the full details by going to this link and expanding the Visual Analytics grouping at the bottom of the list of track topics.

We will also be hosting our bi-annual Visual Analytics Commission Meeting, held on Wednesday, July 5th from 12:30 – 1:20PM in Delaware B. At our business meeting we will propose some ideas for future commission related activities, and we look forward to hearing from you about what you’d like this group to focus on going forward. We are also especially interested to hear from potential volunteers (yes, students too!) in this meeting who would like to take a more active role in shaping what happens in the years ahead.

Finally, at the ICC we will be taking part in a special session highlighting a new slate of cartography research agenda papers that are forthcoming in the International Journal of Cartography. These five articles will be briefly summarized in a session on Wednesday, July 5th from 4:10 – 5:50 in Delaware B. The Visual Analytics commission led the development of one of these five articles, found here.

All five articles will eventually be released in a special, open-access issue of the International Journal of Cartography.

Announcing SpatialVA – A GIScience 2016 Workshop on Understanding Spatial Data with Visual Analytics

Please join us for a SpatialVA 2016, a workshop co-located with the GIScience 2016 conference in Montreal, Canada on September 27, 2016.

The workshop calls for new visual analytics methods and applications for spatial and spatio-temporal data which demonstrate the usefulness of these techniques for analytical reasoning about space and time. We are particularly interested in how interactive visualisations can support knowledge construction and insights from spatial data, either big or small.

We intend for this workshop to reach the widest possible audience, and therefore call for submissions in any application area using any type of spatial or spatio-temporal data. We encourage approaches that take advantage of both spatial and temporal characteristics of such data, those that allow analysis across different spatial or temporal scales and those that provide new dynamic interactive visualisations for data exploration. We encourage submissions to explicitly consider how the proposed visual approach supports analytical reasoning about the data and ideally, demonstrate how the inclusion of the interactive visualisations into the analysis process aids understanding and decision-making.

We call for extended abstract submissions on the following topics of interest:

  • New visual analytics methods for spatial or spatio-temporal data.
  • Applications of using new or existing spatio-temporal visual analytics methods in any discipline.
  • Evaluations of visual analytics approaches that help us understand how users apply such tools.
  • Theoretical demonstrations and frameworks for visual support of analytical reasoning.
  • Advances in knowledge construction and reasoning about spatial and temporal phenomena and processes.
